I'm just gonna put out some feelers here and see what you guys think because I've been going in circles.
Aside from ongoing shows and more "niche" shows, I've been trying to pick one of the big name classics to do as sort of a regular fixture. And really at this point it seems to come down to Naruto vs. One Piece.
Initially Once Piece seemed like a difficult choice for a few reasons. But after thinking about it I think I might have answers to a lot of the objections:
Point 1: Length
In my head I was like, "well Naruto probably makes more sense right now cause One Piece is too long." Which made me wonder how long Naruto actually was, for some reason just naturally assuming it's gonna be similar to Hunter x Hunter. What are we looking at, like 200 eps?
So I look Naruto up and yeah, it's nothing crazy, just a it's just a nice and breezy
720 EPISODES!!!
That also makes it a multi-year proposition, so that weakens the time argument against One Piece.
Point 2: The remake
The fact that there's a OP remake right around the corner was another major reason I was holding back from just going with One Piece.
But then thinking about this some more as well, the remake is gonna be what, one season?
And it's probably gonna come out weekly for the first season, and after that is anyone's guess.
Comparing the existing show to the remake, I had the realization that actually they're not equivalents, and in fact there's nothing stopping me from starting the original One Piece now AND watching the remake as it comes out in (allegedly) February.
Point 3: Filler
I've heard the original has major filler problems and that does create a challenge since typically one video is one episode and it's hard to deviate from that format (since production time doesn't really change). Two points here:
Sometimes filler episodes are suprisingly interesting
If I know in advance which episodes are filler, I can perhaps somewhat plan around this for efficiency (though I don't think I would outright skip episodes). For example, what I did with some of the MHA recap episodes is do them but edit out the vast majority of them if I had nothing to add, and then just make it a joint episode video.
Point 4: It's gonna take at least 7 years just to CATCH UP (even assuming a brisk watch pace)
This is scary as hell. Honestly I just hate thinking about that time passing in general. But I think the counter thought there is that it doesn't happen in blocks of 7 years, it happens episode by episode. Thinking about it all at once is a different animal than thinking about just starting it and seeing how things play out.
Point 5: It will take over the channel
To give this objection credit, there are some ways in which this would be true. Assuming I only watched One Piece until the end, by then it would be a little less than half my total output up until this point (I think). It also would be super super consistent on the schedule and just would never go away.
The way that this is not true is that I would never solely watch One Piece. I would of course continue existing shows and I always want to have a place for shows like Run with the Wind, for example, and newer shows that are interesting. What I could do is just reduce or increase One Piece depending on what else is going on. If I managed it well, that would create a situation where One Piece exists as a long running project (lots of peace of mind there for me), while everything else is business as usual.
Other major pros:
It's legendary. Surely that is for good reason.
My wife is a huge fan and lit up when I told her I was thinking about watching it.
Virtually endless content and stability / a cornerstone of scheduling for me, even as I watch new and existing shows.
Suitable for YouTube, not suffering from the "great but overly niche" issue.
And just to make it extra clear: There's still room for everything else. It would never be One Piece exclusively.
But... even outlining all that I also want to watch Naruto.
So this is basically where I'm stuck.
Should I just put it to poll? The poll in that case would be Naruto vs. One Piece, which would be hilarious but kind of awesome.
What do you guys think?
Other rough plans that I'll solidify later:
Obviously continuing Re: Zero in August
I'm going to continue Daemons of the Shadow Realm which I think is back soon
Oregairu seems like a good show to put in the Run with the Wind Slot when that ends in a few weeks
Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for the feedback :D
